Побольше бы таких жизнеутверждающих книг как «Я все еще мечтаю о тебе» или I still dream about you от американской писательницы Фэнни Флэгг или Fannie Flagg! Это история о немолодой уже женщине, которая, будучи недовольна всей своей жизнью, решает покончить самоубийством. Пока дело дойдет до дня Х (D Day in English) она успеет открыть в себе и жизни много такого, о чем и не подозревала.
Мне понравилось, что это не очередная любовная новелла, а история поиска себя. Также приятным бонусом стали очень характерные персонажи, особенно начальница главной героини Hazel — прямо какой-то ходячий заряд энергии и оптимизма.
Хочется также отметить, что язык в книге довольно легкий, а история увлекательная, так что читается на одном дыхании.
А я, конечно, не могла читать просто так и отмечала незнакомые (или хорошо забытые) слова и выражения.
Итак,kismet /kiz-mit/ (из арабского языка) — судьба, счастливая случайность: It is sheer kismet running into you today!What chance did I stand against kismet.
to be walking on eggshells around smb — быть предельно внимательным к кому-то, бояться задеть словом или делом (букв. ходить по яичной скорлупе): She always felt it (the difference between black and white people) when white people were walking on eggshells around her, nervous about saying something that might offend her.

Слово colours также можно использоваться (и давно используется) вместо слова flags (флаги) (the crowd waved the school colours). Такое значение и кроется, например, в идиоме to pass smth (an exam) with flying colours — сдать экзамен на отлично. Это выражение пришло из морского жаргона. Победивший в сражении корабль всегда возращался в порт с развеващимися на ветру флагами. Проигравшие корабли свои флаги держали опущенными.Еще одно «морское» выражение — to sail (fight) under false colours. Тут все довольно понятно — плыть под ненастоящими флагами. Так обычно делали пираты, дабы обмануть судно, которое они собирались захватить: The pirates often determined a ship’s nationality first.
