За последнее время собралось несколько интересных английских слов и выражений. Преимущественно из Гарри Поттера (опять!) 😉
A stopper — пробка (в баночке с лекарством, например), to unstopper smth — вынуть пробку: Unstopper this bottle for me, will you ? I can’t do it myself, my hands are shaking too badly.
Не передать моего удивления, когда я узнала, что смерть в английском языке предстает в образе мужчины! Death is he! Небольшой отрывок из сказки The Deathly Hallows (Дары Смерти):
“‘In time, the brothers reached a river too deep to wade through and too dangerous to swim across. However, these brothers were learned in the magical arts, and so they simply waved their wands and made a bridge appear across the treacherous water. They were halfway across it when they found their path blocked by a hooded figure.
“‘And Death spoke to them—”’
“Sorry,” interjected Harry, “but Death spoke to them?”
“It’s a fairy tale, Harry!”
“Right, sorry. Go on.”
“‘And Death spoke to them. He was angry that he had been cheated out of three new victims, for travelers usually drowned in the river. But Death was cunning. He pretended to congratulate the three brothers upon their magic, and said that each had earned a prize for having been clever enough to evade him.”
to spare someone’s feelings — пощадить чьи-то чувства, то есть не сказать или не сделать того, что ты хочешь, чтобы не обидеть человека: The smell from the kitchen was getting stronger: It was something like burning underpants. Harry wondered whether it would be possible to eat enough of whatever Xenophilius was cooking to spare his feelings.
I’ll spare you the details — Я опущу детали. to spare someone something — огородить человека от какого-то опыта (например, позволить ему не слушать утомительные детали).
to break a piece of news to smb — поведать кому-то страшную новость: I don’t know how to break this to you — Я не знаю, с чего начать/как рассказать тебе об этом.
angry burns — ярко-красные (а буквально “злые”) ожоги: Both had angry red burns all over their faces and arms, and their clothing was singed away in places.
Если вы читали книги про Гарри Поттера, то знаете, что настоящее имя главного отрицательного героя — Tom Riddle. А вы знаете, что такое a riddle?
a riddle — это загадка. Например,
What is the easiest way to double your money?
What belongs to you but is used more by others?
What goes up and doesn’t come back down? (ответы в конце поста)
Также a riddle — это загадочный человек, или мистическая речь.
to riddle — говорить загадками.
А есть и еще одно значение глагола to riddle — изрешетить (отсюда сущ. a riddle — грубо сделанное решето). Оно никак не связано с первым, потому что имеет другие этимологические корни. to be riddled with smth — быть полным чего-то плохого. Более понятно будет на примерах:
Their old dog was riddled with disease so they’ve decided to help it to die — У их бедной старой собаки болело уже всё, что только можно, и они наконец решились помочь ей умереть.
The report was riddled with errors. — Отчет был полон опечаток.
Можно что-то делать «сколько душеньке угодно» — to read to your heart’s content, for example. А вот «насмотреться» — это to look one’s fill: ... when he had looked his fill they turned again toward the church.
Когда про кого-то говорят, что у него будет a field day (букв. «день в поле№), это не обязательно значит, что человек поедет на природу. Скорее всего это значит, что тут можно будет чем-то поживиться или даже по полной программе насладиться чем-то: The newspapers had a field day when the wedding was announced (= they wrote a lot about it and printed many photographs of it).
The newspapers would have a field day ifhis drinking was ever widely known.
Are you on speaking terms again? — можете спросить вы у подруги, которая недавно поругалась с бойфрендом. И это значит не просто, что вы через силу отвечаете друг другу “да” или “нет”, а то что вы снова “в хороших отношениях”.
Чаще всего эта фраза употребляется с отрицанием:
We’re not on speaking terms with Mary at the moment. We had a serious disagreement. — Мы сейчас в плохих отношениях с Мэри. Мы очень сильно поссорились.
Представьте, что вы с кем-то спорите. Вы очень хотите убедить человека и всё говорите-говорите-говорите. Но человек совсем не хочет принимать вашу точку зрения, и чтобы остановить уже этот словесный поток, он говорит вам: Save your breath. I won’t change my mind whatever you say. — Побереги дыхание. (мы скажем “Да хватит уже!). Я не поменяю свою точку зрения, чтобы ты ни сказал.
to hoodwink (syn. to decieve) — обмануть: “Because they hoodwinked a very powerful magical object!” said Moody. “It would have needed an exceptionally strong Confundus Charm to bamboozle that goblet into forgetting that only three schools compete in the tournament… I’m guessing they submitted Potter’s name under a fourth school, to make sure he was the only one in his category…”
let your hair down — позволить себе расслабиться (букв. распустить волосы): «The Yule Ball is of course a chance for us all to — er — let our hair down. But that does NOT mean that we will be relaxing the standards of behaviour we expect from Hogwarts students. I will be most seriously displeased if a Gryffindor student embarrasses the school in any way.»
to make a pig’s ear of something or to make a dog’s breakfast of smth — сделать что-то очень плохо: She tried to cut her hair and made a real dog’s breakfast of it.
You should have seen the ceiling after he’d finished painting it. It was a complete dog’s breakfast.
