Так обычно говорят про какое-то неприятное действие/работу, которую вы делаете только ради того, чтобы потом иметь возможность делать что-то другое: Yes, I work at McDonalds but it’s just a means to an end. To go off on a tangent — начать говорить на совершенно другую тему: He was telling us about his trip to Cambodia and then suddenly went off on a tangent and started speaking about his new boss.
To wax lyrical — впадать в лиричное настроение.
Wax — это же «воск», не так ли? Так и есть. Но существует и старый глагол to wax, который, если и употребляется в наши дни, то только в отношении луны, и обозначает «расти, становиться». The moon waxes during the first half of its cycle and wanes (еще один старый глагол) during the second.

Ça déboîte — это круто: La Saintonge et ses environs, ça déboite.
