Английская лексика из книг про Гарри Поттера

В этот раз я буду писать ко всем словам синонимы, не просто копировать из словаря, а пытаться вспомнить, что я сама знаю (I’ll rack my brain in search for a term that I know).
to go bizark/ballistic (go mad, angry): Mum went bizark;  ‘… better hurry up, Mum’s going ballistic, she says we’re going to miss the train …’

to come off  — получиться, выйти: his come back didn’t come off as he wanted, he needed it up. 
Come off it! частенько говорят герои книги, когда слышат что-то невероятное. По-русски я бы перевела как «хватит заливать!», «довольно уже мне лапшу на уши вешать».

I could do — мне бы не помешало…, я бы не отказался: we could all do with a laugh

to carry on (continue doing smth) — продолжать делать что-то: We are working as hard as we can so that Voldemort couldn’t carry on his plans. 

abysmal — хуже, чем ужасный: ‘Guess what I got for my birthday?’ said Neville.
‘Another Remembrall?’ said Harry, remembering the marble-like device Neville’s grandmother had sent him in an effort to improve his abysmal memory.

to follow suit (to do/act like the others) — поступать также, как и другие, уподобится чьему-то примеру: ‘Oh, let’s get out of here.’
She slammed down her own knife and fork; Ron looked longingly at his half-finished apple pie but followed suit.

to give off — испускать: Harry knew at once why Neville had chosen to pass this compartment by. The girl gave off an aura of distinct dottiness

to stand by — стоять в стороне: Don´t stand by and let the others have all the fun.
Недавно узнала, что есть standby tickets на авиаперелеты. Это значит, что ты приходишь в аэропорт и летишь на том рейсе, на котором есть места.
to pass by — проходить мимо (пример выше)

to point out — указать на что-то, кого-то, обращать внимание на что-то, кого-то: Harry could not help noticing that a lot of people stared back at him with great interest and that several of them nudged their neighbours and pointed him out. After he had met this behaviour in five consecutive carriages he remembered that the Daily Prophet had been telling its readers all summer what a lying show-off he was.

to show off (to brandish smth, to brag about smth) — кичиться, хвастаться, красоваться, рисоваться; a show-off — хвастун (пример выше)

to do smb in (to kill, to murder) — «пришить», убить, прикончить: ‘Why?’ said Harry irritably. ‘I thought Voldemort was supposed to be lying low, or are you telling me he’s going to jump out from behind a dustbin to try and do me in?’

Я уже говорила в первом посте про язык в этих книгах, что Дж. К. Роулинг даже иногда подстраивает пословицы и поговорки под нужды обитателей магического мира. Так, например, «попридержи коней! не так быстро» по-английски будет Hold your horses!, а в книге — Hold your hippogriphs, Hermione! I haven’t finished!

Вот просто всё продумано в этих книгах. Даже доктора не доктора, а целители!

healer from to heal — лечить, исцелять. Time heals — время лечит.

Этот небольшой диалог навел меня на мысли об этимологии слова «доктор». Я сразу вспомнила, что по-испанский docto (или более просторечная форма ducho — сведущий, искушенный в чем-то). А латинское doctus — ученый, образованный, просвещенный; знающий, сведущий.

be sandwiches between — быть зажатым между чем-то, кем-то: He couldn’t move an inch. He was sandwiches between Ron and Hermione,

wrought a change (употребляется только в прошедшем) — изменить: Events in Paris wrought a change in British opinion towards France and Germany.
The news of his parents’ attackers’ escape had wrought a strange and even slightly alarming change in him.

spurr smb on to (syn. encourage) — подтолкнуть: Harry was pleased to see that all of them, even Zacharias Smith, had been spurred on to work harder than ever by the news that ten more Death Eaters were now on the loose, but in nobody was this improvement more pronounced than in Neville.
Интересно, что в книжке English Phrasal Verbes in Use, из которой я недавно и узнала этот фразовый глагол, был пример именно «подтолкнуть к еще большей работе»: My success in the exam spurred me on to study even  harder.

to fish out — «выловить», достать: ‘Fire away, then, Rita,’ said Hermione serenely, fishing a cherry out from the bottom of her glass.

a pronounced change — заметное изменение

jeopardise — угрожать: ‘If she catches yeh, it’ll be all of our necks on the line,’ he told them flatly, and with no desire to do anything that might jeopardise his job further they abstained from walking down to his hut in the evenings.
Видимо, jeopardise частенько используется именно в отношении работы: he jeopardized his job by being persistently unpunctual

bridge of the nose — переносица: Hagrid was standing beside the doors into the Entrance Hall, waiting for a crowd of Ravenclaws to pass. He was still as heavily bruised as he had been on the day he had come back from his mission to the giants and there was a new cut right across the bridge of his nose.

quibble — игра слов, каламбур; to quibble — препираться, спорить по мелочам; каламбурить.
If you’re satisfied with the contract, why are you quibbling about the exact hours of work? — Если контракт тебя устраивает, зачем ты препираешься по поводу уточнения часов работы?

tuck in — жадно есть, уплетать: There is a time for speech-making, but this is not it. Tuck in! (здесь скорее это сказано с иронией)
He stared at Hermione and the Weasleys, all tucking into their sandwiches, and thought how he would feel if they went back to Hogwarts without him.

to be on tenterhooks — сидеть как на иголках, мучиться неизвестностью, букв. на «крючках»:  he was still on tenterhooks that Hagrid might get the sack

to bring smth up (syn. to mention) — упомянуть что-то:  he couldn’t stop himself dwelling on the dream in which he had been Voldemort – though he didn’t bring it up with Ron and Hermione again; he didn’t want another telling-off from Hermione.
to tell off (to shoot down, to criticise)- отчитывать, разносить

to lose one’s marbles (to go crazy, to go off the deep end) — сходить с ума, букв. терять свои шарики (извилины): ‘We don’t need another story about how Harry’s lost his marbles!’ said Hermione angrily.

to look daggers at smb. — злобно смотреть, бросать гневные взгляды на кого-л.: ‘But of course,’ she said, lowering the quill and looking daggers at Hermione, ‘Little Miss Perfect wouldn’t want that story out there, would she?’

to stick to smth — придерживаться какого-то мнения, верить: ‘So you actually stick to it, do you, that He Who Must Not Be Named is back?’ said Rita

It was a narrow escape — (могу перевести только описательно) Нам повезло! Еще бы чуть-чуть и нас бы поймали/заметили и т.п.

to corner smb — загнать в угол: he had a look of someone who was just cornered

Название факультета Hufflepuff образовано от фразы to huff and puff — букв. пыхтеть и тяжело дышать – пыжится, т.е. пытаться что-то сделать. Как помните, студенты этого факультета звезд с неба не срывали. Кроме Седрика Диггори в четвертой книге.

В The Goblet of Fire Гермиона организует общество по защите домашних эльфов, и на бейджиках, которые Гермиона дает вступающим в общество написано S.P.E.W. Рон еще возмущается: What?! Spew?!

— No! It is S P E W.

И правильно возмущается, потому что to spew — тошнить, рвать.

Я очень повеселилась, когда узнала, как этот пассаж перевели на русский. В русских книгах общество по защите эльфов называется Г А В Н Э. Уж не помню, как расшифровывается, но переводчикам 5 баллов. Молодцы!)
