C некоторых пор мне особо бросаются в глаза названия животных, когда они приобретают “глагольные черты”, то есть, например частичку to или окончание -ed.
Парочка мне встретилась в книге про Леди Альмину, другие в The Casual Vacancy, про которую в следующем посте.
to lionise — чествовать: He was a nonentity before he won an Olympic gold medal. Then he was lionised wherever he went.
to snake — извиваться: A thin river snaked around the edge of the hill and through the town, straddles by a toy stone bridge.
to duck — нырять, убегать: He sidled around the corner of the counter and edged past Maureen… then ducked through the door that led into the dingy little back room.
weasel — ласка (животное); to weasel — выудить, вытащить какую-то информацию … but before she could make him squirm more or weasel private information out of them both … the door bell rang.
to rat on — отказываться от своих слов: They ratted on their promise.
to beef up — усиливать, укреплять, подкреплять (ресурсами) ; расширять; наращивать: We should beef up security on the site as soon as that first post appeared…
to beaver away — работать (как бобер) не покладая рук;): Isobel works harder than any woman I know, which is saying something in Scotland because all the women beaver away endlessly. If they’re not running huge houses, or bringing up children, or gardening, then they’re organizing enormous charity events or engaged in some home industry or other. Like running farm shops and selling all their own produce, or drying flowers, or keeping bees, or restoring antiques, or making the most beautiful curtains for people. » » Don’t they ever have fun? » » Yes, they have fun, but it’s not Long Island fun…

to monkey about / around — дурачиться, забавляться, играться: I knew a window would soon get broken, with all those children monkeying around in the garden. — Я знал, что стекло скоро разобьют, ведь в саду играло столько детей.
2) пародировать, передразнивать Syn: mimic , take off , ape , mock
3) = monkey about / around (monkey with) — неумело обращаться, портить: Somebody’s been monkeying with my papers again. — Кто-то опять рылся в моих бумагах.
to wolf — жадно есть, пожирать: he wolfed down his breakfast
He wolfed down the rest of the biscuit and cheese…
She bought a hot dog from a stand on a street corner and wolfed it down.
to cow — пугать; запугивать, устрашать; внушать страх: to cow someone into submission — подчинить кого-либо: Don’t let yourself be cowed down by the director’s heavy scolding. — Ты не должен пасовать перед нападками директора.
И снова от меня:
to snail — тащиться, проходить медленно как улитка, плестись: The time snailed over.
to ferret out — разведывать, разнюхивать (ferret — хорек): The team is trying to ferret out missing details…
to horse around — дурачиться: During the school holidays there was no peace in the house. Johnny and Annie horsed around all day, every day.
to chicken out — струсить: Are you absolutely sure you want to go bungee jumping with me? I don’t want you to chicken out at the last minute.
to squirrel smth away — захомячить, заныкать:
Joan’s salary is very low but a few years ago she started to squirrel money away. It took her a long time, but she finally saved enough for a deposit for a flat.
Just how much personal information are websites squirrelling away about us from our own computers?
to weasel out — избежать ответственности или выполнения какого-то задания (а weasel — ласка): Mary wanted a promotion but didn’t want to work hard so she tried to weasel her way out of the most difficult tasks in the office.
to rabbit on — говорить и говорить, хотя собеседник не проявляет никакого интереса: He’s always rabbiting on about his stamp collection.
to frogmarch — сопровождать: The drunken suspect was handcuffed by the police and frogmarched to the waiting police van. (Послушайте небольшой эпизод от BBC in The English we speak про этот глагол)
to jeopardise [‘ʤepədaɪz] — рисковать, подвергать опасности. Синоним to risk: … the slightest weakening in our work may jeopardise Mr Mount’s seat…
Про слово jeopardize хочется сказать отдельно, потому что… леопард и гепард по-английски … a cheetah. А слово jeopardize я включила в эту подборку потому, что первое, о чем подумает носитель русского языка, увидев это слово, это о животном, о гепарде или леопарде. Ведь так?
А между тем jeopardy (опасность) происходит от старофранцузского ieu parti ‘игра, выиграть или проиграть в которой можно было с одинаковой вероятностью’.
