Если вам нравятся книги Джоджо Мойес и Фэнни Флэгг, то вам скорее всего любопытно будет почитать и новый роман австралийской писательницы Лиан Мориарти (прежде всего меня, как большого фаната Шерлока, привлекла ее фамилия 😉
Давайте послушаем, что сама писательница говорит о своей книге The Husband’s secret
В двух словах: Сесилия — счастливая жена и мать троих прелестных девочек. Однажды, пока муж находится в командировке, она находит на чердаке письмо от него, на котором написано «Открыть в случае моей смерти». Спросив у мужа про это письмо, и поняв, что что-то он ей не договаривает, она открывает письмо и… Жизнь ее меняется навсегда. Прочитав его, она понимает, что лучше бы она его никогда в глаза не видела, но what is done cannot be undone и теперь ей нужно решать, что важнее — правда или счастье ее семьи.
И, как всегда, небольшое подспорье для тех, кто будет читать по-английски:

frumpy — (of woman or her clothes) dowdy and old-fashioned — старомодный: And, by the way, she was not frumpy. Just yesterday, a truck driver had given her a long slow wolf-whistle when she was running against the lights to buy coriander.
to tousle — make smth (especially a person’s hair) untidy — разлохматить волосы: Sister Ursula’s coffin was being carried from the church by four broad-shouldered, tousle-haired young men in suits and ties…
It’s a different kettle of fish — это совсем другое дело: ‘My goodness, she’s a different kettle of fish from Sister Veronica!’

Там же, по ссылке, упоминается выражение in a fine pickle, которое также встретилось мне в книжке:
to be in a fine pickle — попасть в переплет, в сложную ситуацию: So I’m in a bit of a pickle to be honest, as my mother would say. A real pickle.
to be done and dusted — полностью закончить какое-либо дело: Well, if you could just sign the ‘allergies and medications’ sections here’, she said to Tess, jabbing at the form with her fingertip. ‘No, not there. Here. Then we’ll be done and dusted’.
in the nick of time — в последний момент: ‘So, now, Cecilia,’ Marka was flustered with responsibility and the sausage rolls slid about on the tray in her hand, ‘would you like a drink?’
Cecilia wheeled her bag to a neat stop and rescued the sausage rolls just in the nick of time.

inkling — a slight knowledge or suspicion — догадка, подозрение: She was going to be icy and controlled and give him his first inkling of the almighty task that lay ahead of him.
Why did her parents divorce? She had no inkling whatsoever.
run-of-the-mill — обычный, ничем не примечательный: His eyes, his strange hazel eyes, the color of beaten copper, with thick black eyelashes, eyes that were so different from Tess’s own run-of-the-mill pale blue ones.
to snicker — to give a smothered or half-surpressed laugh, snigger — усмехнуться: She’d never been fond of classic romantic moments. They made her snicker.
posy — маленький букет цветов
a nosey parker — любопытная Варвара: So being a nosey parker that I am, I came over to say hello.
(There is) plenty more fish in the sea — в море еще много рыбы. Так говорят тому, кого только что бросил любимый человек. «На нем (ней) свет клином не сошелся», сказали бы мы.
spleen — селезёнка. Первый раз встречаю слово spleen в этом значении! Другие значения — гнев, злоба, меланходия, уныние.
They already knew that Polly suffered severe skin abrasions, a fractured tibia and a ruptured spleen.
Слова, помеченные в словаре informal
kinky — involving or given to unusual sexual behavior — извращенный: Cecilia spent most of Sister Ursula’s funeral thinking about sex. Not kinky sex. Nice, married, approved-by-the-Pope sex. But still. Sister Ursula probably wouldn’t have appreciated it.
to skedaddle — depart quickly or hurriedly — уходить второпях: I must skedaddle, I’ve got to get to my zumba class…
a tiff — a petty quarrel, especially one between friends or lovers — небольшая ссора, to have a tiff — повздорить: Joanna had a tiff with her boyfriend.
funny может означать не только «веселый, забавный», но и (of a person or part of the body) not in wholly good health or order, slightly ill — не совсем здоровый; но в нашем примере перевод скорее будет «неудобный»: Her neck ached. She must have slept at a funny angle.
scrumptious — (of food) extremely appetizing or delicious — крайне аппетитный, — (of a person) very attractive — очень привлекательный: Enjoy some time with that scrumptious grandson of yours.
to faff about — болтаться без дела (послушайте коротенький подкаст Люка про этот глагол):
— Are you… going away?
— Just faffing about, said Trudy.
kooky — strange or eccentric — странный, эксцентричный: Her kooky grey wispy hair made her look like an elderly toddler.
shrink — a psychiatrist — психолог. Забавное слово. Вообще to shrink — это уменьшаться в размере. Как говорит словарь shrink в значении «психолог» происходит от headshrinker — тот, кто уменьшает голову. Может быть те, кто «придумал» это слово исходили из образа головы «распухшей» от всяких разных мыслей? И поэтому тот кто избавляет вас от излишних мыслей и называется headshrinker или просто shrink(er)? Но это только мои догадки.
to potter around (одно из моих любимых слов) — заниматься мелкими приятными делами:
— What are you going to do the rest of the day? asked Lauren.
— I’ll just potter about.
Чисто австралийские слова
as bold as a bandicoot — я уже писала об этом выражении в посте про австралийский английский. Значит — совсем лысый: Rodney Bellach was retired now. As bold as a bandicoot.
to spruik — to speak in public, especially to advertise a show — зазывать, втюхивать что-то: ‘Cecilia sells Tupperware,’ said Tess’s mother…
‘But she doesn’t know us, does she?’ Tess looked hopefully over her shoulder to see if there might be someone else waving back at Cecilia. There was no one. Was she on her way over to spruik Tupperware?
