Разница в употреблении: think of vs. think about

На написание этого поста меня натолкнула небольшая заметка на BBC Learning English о разнице употребления think of и think about.

Так и есть, когда разговор идет о людях think of и think about взаимозаменяемы.

Но в других ситуациях think of — это синоним to imagine, представлять что-то. Например, вас спрашивают, что вы хотите получить на Новый год, а вы отвечаете: I can’t think of anything in particular at the moment — Что-то не могу ничего конкретного в данный момент придумать.

А вот to think about — это поразмышлять, обмозговать что-то: I’ll think about it and call you back later.

И еще парочка примеров:

I’m thinking of a tropical beach, please don’t interrupt me!

 They’re thinking about whether to agree to the sale.

We are thinking about moving to Portugal.
