В начале октября мы обсуждали с Катриной следующие слова, выражения и фразовые глаголы:
to put smth into action — начать применять что-то: When you learn new words it is essential to put them into action as soon as possible because if you don’t do it you will surely forget them within a couple of days.
У меня в словарике записано три возможных перевода для слова «раздражительный» Cantankerous/peevish/quarrelsome
cantankerous говорят обычно про старых, раздражительных людей (old irritable people)
peevish — не очень употребительное (помните вредного полтергейста Peeves из Гарри Поттера? Я как раз недавно где-то слышала, что если бы раздавали награды за умение подбирать своим персонажам подходящие имена, J. K. Rowling отхватила бы первый приз)
quarrelsome — легко вступающий в спор, любящий поспорить (easily attracted to argument)
to quarrel — «спорить», высокий, официальный или газетный стиль. Разговорные эквиваленты — fight and argue
to brush smb off — отмахнуться от кого-то: The boss just brushed him off and told him to get back to work.
to brush it off — отмахнуться от какой-то мысли, идеи, выбросить из головы: I find it hard to brush off what people say about my style of teaching.
But I easily brush off what my daughter says to me when she is angry. I know she doesn’t mean what she says so I don’t pay any attention.
to fork out — раскошелиться на что-то, то есть выложить деньги на что-то нужное, но в том же время не очень желаемое: I had to fork out for a gymnastics costume for Milana.
He had to fork out for the car insurance.
to skimp on — экономить на чем-то: She rarely skimp on shoes. She judges people by their shoes and she cannot allow herself wear the cheap ones.
to spur smb on to do smth — подтолкнуть кого-то сделать что-то, вдохновить: When I tell my sister that she has made a great progress with her English it always spurs her on to study even harder.
to potter around (обожаю это выражение)) — делать мелкие приятные дела: I was doing nothing in particular just pottering around making up the flat.
to see to smth. Чаще всего употребляется готовая фраза I’ll see to it — я об этом позабочусь; я этим займусь: I’ll see to it that your daughter will make progress with her English
to nose around — любопытствовать, вынюхивать: When she comes to a new city she likes nosing around the back streets. She says that the most interesting things happen there.
to want for smth — нуждаться в чем-то. Очень ограниченное употребление. Так говорят только про детей, которые в детстве ни в чем не нуждались: as a child she never wanted for anything
to call upon — призвать. Оказалось, это устаревшее выражение. Времен Downton Abbey. Masters could call upon the servants to clean the mess, for example.
А мне было интересно, как перевести фразу: Чтобы сдать экзамен, тебе придется прибегнуть/призвать всё то, что ты выучил. Катрина сказала бы это так: To pass the exam you have to think up everything that you’ve learned
to lap it up -1) верить на слово, принять за чистую монету. Это выражение я узнала из Гарри Поттера. Отрывок был такой:
«‘I haven’t got a clue what this lot’s supposed to mean,’ Harry said, staring down at a long list of calculations.
‘You know,’ said Ron, whose hair was on end because of all the times he had run his fingers through it in frustration, ‘I think it’s back to the old Divination standby.’
‘What – make it up?’
‘Yeah,’ said Ron, sweeping the jumble of scrawled notes off the table, dipping his pen into some ink and starting to write.
‘Next Monday,’ he said, as he scribbled, ‘I am likely to develop a cough, owing to the unlucky conjunction of Mars and Jupiter.’ He looked up at Harry. ‘You know her – just put in loads of misery, she’ll lap it up.’

А вот Катрина заметила, что другое значение — наслаждаться чем-то, получать огромное удовольствие — гораздо более употребительное:
She was pretending to dislike the attention being received at the bar, but everyone knew she was lapping it up.
My dogs lap up whatever attention I can give them.
The jokes were crude but the audience were lapping them up.
to get worked up about — «запариваться», слишком переживать: I easily get worked up about every little thing.
to call in on my grandmother / to pop in on smb (более употребительное) — заскочить к кому-то ненадолго: I’ll pop in at 7 to give you back the money I owe you.
to be tied down — быть привязанным к дому, работе и т.п.: He hates being tied down so he works as a freelancer when he is the one who decides when to work and when to have a break.
to keep in with — поддерживать хорошие отношение: It’s a good thing to keep in with you mother-in-law.
