Shoestrings were common and cheap and also thin and fragile. The former pair of words implies a small amount of money, the latter slender resources. By putting them together we are supplied with an image of getting by on less than is really required.
Между прочим сама слово shoestring в современном языке сохранилось практически исключительно в этой фразе, «шнурки» же называют shoelaces or bootlaces.
А еще я узнала, что обувь, по крайней мере женскую, можно условно разделить на sensible shoes — мягкая, комфортная обувь на низком каблуке или вообще без оного; и fashinable shoes that are right the opposite of their sensible counterparts.
При слове shoes мне еще всегда вспоминается песня из фильма «Доброе утро» — New Shoes by Paolo Nutini.

Here is mine:
Don’t judge a book by it’s cover
Jake comes from a wealthy family. He is always dressed in the latest fashion. He has the most fashinable clothes and although he is only 10 years old he pays a lot of attention to what he wears. Without doubt he judges the children he meets by what they wear.
There is a boy in Jake’s class called Stephen who has no father and whose mother is a nurse. They live on a shoestring and Stephen has no choice but to wear clothes and shoes after his elder brother Edwin. Stephen was a shy and quiet type, exactly the type the children usually choose as a scapegoat.
And Jake was the lider.
So no wonder Jake and Stephen never spoke properly to each other.
One day Jake came across Stephen in the park. Stephen was sitting on a bench musing about something. Jake sat on the opposite side of the bench and gazed at Stephen, at his messy blond hair, an old but neat jacket, discolored pair of jean a size bigger that Stephen was and a pair of once super fashionable and expensive trainers Stephen’s father bought to Edwin before he ran out on them all.
Jake fell sorry for this quiet boy and even remorse that he had treated him so badly all the time.
He thought for a moment and then said…
