На сайте Lyrsense имеется отличный перевод. Да и на английском не лишним будет почитать, потому что на слух не понятно…хм… процентов 80?
Но все-таки по тем 20% я догадалась, что a thrift shop — это магазин, в котором за бесценок отдают не новые вещи, потому что до этого никогда такого словосочетания не встречала. Но тут же возник вопрос: а как же секонд-хэнд?
На lyrsense перевели как «комисионный», но я комиссионных уже лет 15, а то и больше не встречала нигде. Может быть все-таки стоит перевести как секонд-хенд?
Давайте поближе посмотрим на слово thrift.
thrift — бережливость, экономность.

Но в последние года (проверено по корпусу) слово thrift гораздо чаще встречается в сочетании thrift store/shop.
И как я выяснила на wordreference thrift shop/store говорят в США, в Англии это secondhand shop, в Новой Зеландии и Австралии это op-shop (opportunity).
Вчера по почте я получила новое слово на urban dictionary — thrifster. В двух слов: подвид хипстера, который затоваривается только в секонд-хэндах.
An off-shoot (or sub-culture) of the general hipster trend, but while most contemporary hipsters attempt to buy indie flavor by frequenting Urban Outfitters or American Apparel, a «thriftster» alternatively obtains said style by frequenting thrift stores or through general use of hand-me-downs. While shopping at the Salvation Army may have been included in the original definition of a «hipster,» now that mainstream commercialism has caught onto the hipster fashion trends, the term «thriftster» must be adopted to differentiate those who appreciate used clothing and the ideals that come along with it from the ever-increasing group of trendy 20 and 30-somethings who are content to buy the massed-produced version of this clothing without asking how it got to be there in the first place. О том, что можно найти в лондонских thrift shops читайте в Time Out London. Сомневаюсь, что я что-нибудь бы там купила, но зайти — обязательно бы зашла, из любопытства)
А вы как относитесь к thrift shops (там и не разобралась, переводить ли это как «комиссионный» или как «секонд-хэнд»…)?
