Английские слова
cronut (амер.) — новое слово в выпечке;) смесь круасана и донатса: In my latest column for the Boston Globe, I look at the recent craze for «cronuts,» which are a croissant-doughnut hybrid created by an upscale French bakery in Manhattan. It was such a hit that imitators have created their own hybrids using names like dossant or doissant.
turning point — поворотный момент (у нас момент, у них — точка):

certain, but ascertain. На слух никогда не догадается, что в слове [ˌæsə’teɪn] (убеждаться, удостоверяться) тот же корень, что и в [‘sɜːt(ə)n].
She ascertained that fraud had been committed. — Она убедилась в том, что было совершено мошенничество. Can you ascertain who he is? — Вы можете выяснить, кто он?
book hangover — «книжное похмелье» наступает тогда, когда вы закончили читать какую-то особенно интересную книжку и никак не можете вернуться в реальный мир;) «I have a really bad book hangover today, I could hardly concentrate at work.»
petty — мелкий, маленький. Слово не является абсолютным синонимом small, потому что несет в себе ощутимую негативную окраску. Часто употребляется в словосочетаниях petty crime (малозначительное преступление) и petty cash (мелкие статьи дохода/расхода), petty accident (незначительное происшествие). А я помню недавно учила такой пример:
A: Ginny is gunning for me. I think she is after my job. Yesterday I mucked up an important deal and she was thrilled.
B: And what about your boss?
A: I could not dream about a better boss but he has more important things on his plate than to sort out petty office squabbles.
threenager (неологизм) — трехлетний ребенок, который страдает такими же переменами настроения как и тинейджер:
Though my 3-year-old is a little more calm, he demands lots of attention and is a bit of a drama king at times. I like to refer to him as my «threenager.» You never really know what mood he’s going to be in, and he asks «why» at least 100 times in a day.
superdiversity (неологизм) — супер-разнообразие (то, почему я бы хотела жить в Англии), имеется в виду наличие в одной стране большого количества разных этнических групп, смешение рас:

a shortcut — to make a shortcut — срезать (путь): The Rua das Murtas is a narrow road in Sintra that locals tend to use as a shortcut. If you are driving and want to stop here it will be on the hard shoulder.
hard shoulder — обочина! (а буквально-то ведь «твердое плечо»!)

to nibble — попробовать, отведать (именно про еду): nibble a blueberry scone at café Saudade
a person with a sweet tooth, sweet-toothed — сладкоежка: The town of Sintra is known not only for its picture-postcard beauty but also for its delicious cakes and pastries. These five specialities address a must for any visitor with a sweet tooth.
ludicrous — нелепый, смехотворный, смешной. От латинского корня со значением «играть, игра». Этот корень также замечен в словах collude (тайно сговариваться, участвовать в заговоре), interlude (перерыв, антракт, интерлюдия, интермедия) и ludic (игривый).
Этот же корень есть и в испанских словах, так, например, игромания называется по-испански ludopatia.
Французские слова
Вы знаете, что пломбир изобрели во Франции в местечке Plombières-les-Bains.
Я уже успела забыть, как забавно называется по-французски «чей-то молодой человек, парень» — le petit ami (маленький друг;)
avoir la flemme — лениться: Trop la flemme de me lever maintenant. J’ irai tout à l’heure.
tenir la dragée haute — букв. высоко держать драже (для кого-то) (какой образ!), то есть не давать кому-то расслабляться, держать в ежовых рукавицах
happé (фр.) — букв. быть схваченным,перен. увлеченным чем-то : j’ai découvert Luther deux ans après les fans mais je suis complètement happée, tellement dingue d’Idriss Elba
«Вот черт!» по-французски может звучать как «oh purée«
se faire gauler — попасться: si tu te gares devant l’école, à tous les coups tu te feras gauler
